Trona Pinnacles National Natural Landmark, California - May 2011
The Trona Pinnacles is located just south of Death Valley and is a series of calcite deposits that formed underwater thousands of years ago. Some of the tuffas reach as high as 140 feet above the desert floor.
This photo was taken about an hour after sunset with the stars clearly visible overhead. The light on the tuffas was from two strobes hidden behind a large rocky area.
